Plastic Food Storage Containers: Changing History?

Plastic Food containersIn modern times, the ability to transport food over long distances is not anything people look at and say “Ooooo” or “ahhhhh”. The reason being its pretty common place to see plastic food storage containers at your local Wal-Mart or target, or even when you’re going out to dinner and taking leftovers home.

However, did you know that plastic food containers literally changed the course of history and our world? You see, before the invention of the plastic food storage container, food storage was left to other material devices. For example, in the Egyptian Empire time period (so think 4 thousand years ago), food was only able to be stored through weaved baskets. Yes, that’s right. The ancient Egyptians got by storing their precious nutrition in weaved containers.

Now, as someone who lives in a modern world where food storage safety is a big deal, you may think this is ridiculous. However, you would also probably say that it was understandable for a civilization 4,000 years ago not being able to do anything else for storing their food, so the weaved storage basket isn’t as shocking.

However, storage of food wasn’t all that different even less then a hundred years ago. Granted, new materials like wood and metal came into the picture. The only problem was, that both of these materials had about as much of the same safety features for storing food as the ancient Egyptian weaved basket.

Starting to get a little more shocking right? Well, it wasn’t until after the turn of the century that food started to be stored in plastic containers, because it was found it kept food fresher, and make it last longer. The primary reason for this was because plastic has material characteristics that are able to keep many different bacteria’s out of the food that wood and metal can’t.

Not only that, the taste and quality of the food was often compromised in metal and wood storage. It would more often then not, cause the food to taste different then its original source, and is often considered why can goods have an inferior taste then to other foods.  Well that was able to change when plastic food storage containers came into the picture. Not only was it able to transport and store food more safely, but it would also keep the taste of the food preserved and relatively untouched.
